Thanks for providing the Web with an excellent networking service!

In response to your question about what happened to the UPS: a lot of the old member periodicals got reproduced and indexed on microfilm. I remember scanning many of those great old papers at the University of California's Microforms Library, which has a complete collection at the Los Angeles campus (my alma mater!). Try checking with Finnish microform libraries or services for its availability.

These days, it seems like the role of the underground press has been adopted by not only the Web, but by the 'zine scene. Have you ever heard of FACTSHEET FIVE? It's a massive, quarterly review of micro-press publications from all over the world that's a good starting point for exploring the "Xerox samizdat" world.

Yes, I know Factsheet Five, even swapped ad space or introductions with the publisher Mike Gunderloy (he sold the zine to someone about 5-10 years ago, a bit earlier I bought his mailing lists of ezines on a 5-1/4" computer floppy). Back in the 60's the UPS papers had to send free subscriptions to each other and I got some 500-1.000 of these tabloids etc in a few years. Destroyed most when getting married and moved to a small apartment with my wife back in 1966.

I just saw a tv program about Robert Crumb and his world famous underground comics, they were issued in several UPS papers... Crumb was born in 1943 like me, and quite interesting a personality indeed !

Another unforgetable UPS paper was The Other Scenes published by John Wilcox. The circulation - or print order - used to be from 20.000 to over 50.000 and I still have one issue... It was the 32 page two color tabloid on heavy weight white thick paper. BUT 28 PAGES WERE EMPTY, John suggested that everyone writes his/her own articles, poems, news and does the illustrations, drawings, photos etc. The printing expenses and mailing costs of that Other Scenes issue must have been far over US$ 5.000,00 already in the 60's !!!
