A very comprehensive site covering the

"Knights of The Northern Sky" painting (up right) by Jerry Anderson:

During the winter of 1943 three Brewster 239 fighters of the Finnish Air Force patrol the twilight sky over southern Finland in search for marauding Soviet aircraft.

Though overshadowed by the worldwide struggle between the major powers, the small nation of Finland fought a bitter conflict with the Soviet Union during the years 1939 - 1944. Despite overwhelming numerical odds and the frequently brutal climate, Finnish fighters, flying from hidden airstrips and from the surfaces of frozen lakes, inflicted tremendous losses on their opponents. By war's end, the Finns had the highest ratio of aces of any combatant nation and had retained their independence; aviation historians have praised them as "pound for pound, the finest fighter force in the world".

"Knights of The Northern Sky" is a tribute to the skill and courage of Finnish fliers as well as the fighting spirit of the Finnish people. This limited-edition print is signed by the artist and veteran pilots, including Air Master Sergeant Ilmari Juutilainen, Finlands highest scoring ace with 94 victories.

Jerry Anderson was in Finland on 24-27 Sept 1997 and met Karhila, Tani, Huotari, Pekuri, and Leino during his visit.
