General Buster Glosson: War With Iraq - Critical Lessons

When the military is fighting terrorists or conventional enemies, air power is often an American president's first option. The Combination of deadly accurate munitions and radar-evading aircraft make it possible for the first time to win on the ground from the air. And it all started with Buster Glosson, the Air Force general who planned and executed the incredible air campaign against Iraq during the Gulf War.

In War With Iraq: Critical Lessons, Glosson for the first time tells his inside story; from his first days in the Saudi desert as Iraqi troops occupied Kuwait, to the spectacular opening night of punishing air strikes, to Iraq's eventual retreat. War With Iraq takes the reader to the White House, where Glosson briefs the first President Bush on how the war will be won. He writes of private meetings with General Norman Schwarzkopf, the bulldog commander who came to trust Glosson's revolutionary ideas. There is the

"black hole" in Riyadh where Glosson and his Air Force cadre of fighter pilots ran the air campaign. Glosson describes his thinking on one of the war's biggest gambles: his decision to rely on the F-117 - the first stealth aircraft sent to war - to penetrate Baghdad's thick air defenses from day one and bomb must-hit targets.

The ex-Vietnam War fighter pilot also frankly discusses some taboo topics. Was he trying to find and kill Saddam Hussein? Yes. Was Israeli intelligence reliable? No. Did some of Bush's trusted advisers mislead the commander in chief? Yes.

Glosson shows that the art of war is more than picking targets and then matching the right aircraft and munitions. Unlike previous Desert Storm insiders, Glosson is not afraid to call them like he sees them: he praises where appropriate and criticizes where warranted.

War With Iraq is candid, informative, entertaining, and full of lessons for our future wars.
