Gulf War Chronology
The Gulf War Air Combat Box Score SOURCE DATA AND NOTES:
v Lou Drendel produced " And kill MiG's" in 1974 and has made updates to his excellent
original text bringing it up to date with the post Viet Nam air wars. His latest 1997 edition
compiles a list of the Gulf War results that includes 44 entries, a list that gets closer to the
one I had done originally that brings together all of the services. Lou's work was cross
referenced during Dec 1998. Interestingly he awarded the F-111A crew the maneuvering
suicide kill during the first night of the war.
v General Merrill McPeak's "Mother of All Briefings", given in March 1991
v The12 Apr 91 Missile Expenditure Listing in Aerospace Daily
v McAir's "The Backbone of Air Power in Operation Desert Storm: The F-15 Eagle",
presented at the Paris Air Show (Jun 1991), Chart GP11-0152-17-D/cjg.
v The Raytheon Sparrow Missile Expenditure Summary, July 1991
v Discussions with NATO Pilots on the Gulf War at Volkel AB, RNLAF, May 1991
v Maj Bill Strandberg Jr, from the 33rd TFW, did an excellent assessment with an info
cutoff of 17 Jun 91. This is used as the best authority of whether a Kill occurred or
not since it comes from an operational unit who was there. It is surprising that the
Raytheon briefing disagrees on the 22nd of January.
v "INSIDE THE AIR FORCE", 30 August 1991, pg4-5, published a new listing
from Pentagon sources and interviews with Desert Storm veteran pilots. The
BVR notation is a function of this source material.
v "AIR FORCE TIMES", 30 Sep 91, pg 10, "New Flier Named 1st to Down
MiG...Confirms that Capt Jon "JR" Kelk got the 1st kill on 17 Jan, not Steve
Tate, who was credited with the 4th since Robert "Cheese" Graeter got the
2nd and 3rd. Graeter's second Kill was from a maneuvering suicide, not an
AIM-7 as originally presumed.
v Rumors still persist that there was a cooperative A-6E/F-18 kill on an
airborne helicopter with a Walleye PGM, date yet unknown/confirmed.
v The IL-76 kill on 02Feb91 by Masters was talked about as being not a gun but
a Sparrow kill, by pilots who met other pilots from the scoring unit. The
AIM-7 was supposed to have been fired "blind" after EID into weather and
the crash was verified as a kill later by Intel. Other stories continue with
the kill as a "Gun Kill", but still at low altitude. Masters might have been
"afraid" to admit to a gun-kill because of USAF rules.
v Another Tornado kill was assessed as a "ground kill" when bombs destroyed
an F-1 Mirage while taxiing, since it was not airborne, no air-Kill credit.
v Dept of the Navy, CNO, document "The United States Navy in Desert Shield,
Desert Storm", dated 15May1991, states in its chronology appendix,
page A-16, that "eight Iraqi MiG-29's and Mirage F-1's are destroyed" on
the 18th, but their listing is confused with Eastern Standard Time, but on the
19th the summary states: 6 x MiG-29
3 x Mirage F-1
1 x MiG-23
This seems incredible since th Navy totals do not mention the 2 x MiG-21
kills achieved by the VFA-81 F/A-18's. This discounts the reliability of
this source considerably but it does re-establish that more MiG-29's were
being claimed then were actually credited by War's end. By the 20th, the
MiG-29 total was listed at 10. Initially, however, the Navy sources "leaked"
that the VFA-81 kills were MiG-29's, but even with that, total 10 is high.
v Iraq flew around 55 fighter sorties per day for the two weeks preceeding the
17 January and 40 more with support aircraft
v During the War, the IqAF averaged around 30 sorties per day from claims by
the USAF, but the Soviets said that the numbers were closer to 100. AWACS
controllers are convinced they had all of Iraq covered by their radars.
v During the first night of the war, Iraq flew 25 fighter sorties and 90 support
sorties which might have been the dispersal and repositioning of resources.
v At least 16 Iraqi aircraft were downed and several more crashed during the
first week of hostilities
v There semed to have been an IqAF "standdown" on D+9 (25Jan) then the big
"flush" to Iran on D+10 (26Jan) where at least 120 tried at once.
v 375 of the 594 shelters were destroyed and initial estimates showed that as
many as 200 aircraft were destroyed inside, but later "counts" showed around 66 because
the Iraqi's dispersed the aircraft away from the airfields.
v Pentagon released its Conduct of the Persian Gulf Conflict: An
Interim Report to the Congress, July 1991 in February 1992 and the
Final Report was released in April 1992. The report mentions 41 coalition
air combat kills (page ii).
v "INSIDE THE AIR FORCE" (8Feb91, pg 1), stated that USAF generals
confirmed that to date no AMRAAM's were in the Gulf, however they did not
rule out future deployment of the weapons to the region.
v The Journal of Military Aviation, Vol 1, No. 1, Jan/Feb 92, published a work by Bill
Strandberg entitled "Desert Storm Shooters", that provided the latest update on the Kill
listings. He tried to put the kills in Local-Time order (Saudi which is GMT + 3). He totaled
44 which is the same listing that I have accomplished minus the GR.1 bomb kill on a Su-7.
v John M. Deur's "Wall of Eagles", from Intercept Publications, is a one-on-one debrief of each
pilot who obtained a kill during the War. Many facts have been cross checked.

Notes for Day 1:
1. McPeak's Briefing cites 8 Kills
2. Pentagon Release cites 8 Kills as listed
3. McAir F-15 Briefing cites 8 Kills
4. Raytheon Briefing cites 5 Sparrow Kills: (3)F-1 + (2)MiG-29. Actually 2nd Navy Kill was
also an AIM-7 by pilot debrief, "The Shield and the Storm", USN Aviation Association
Special Jun91, and verified in later Pilot Interviews
5. Maj Bill Strandberg's assessment shows (6) USAF F-15C AIM-7 Kills, (1) for the 1st TFW
and (5) for the 33rd TFW
6. CENTCOM Message verified & credited all USAF Kills
7. The MiG-21 Kills for Fox & Mongillo may have been PRC F-7's
8. "Inside the Air Force" notes that Graeter's second F-1 kill was also attributed to the ground
impact of the F-1 after an AIM-7 was employed, but there was no reference to USN kills.
9. Denton/Brandon's EF-111F's MS Kill on an F-1 has never been officially recognized despite
numerous "verifications" from the Press, but Deur's assessment (see below) says no.
10. A MiG-29 Flight Leader Kills his Wingman, then crashes in the excitement.
11. Friedman's Book, Desert Victory, calls out a MiG-25 Foxbat Kill by the 33rd TFW, but no
further verification has surfaced.
12. "Airpower in the Gulf", AFA Book by James P. Coyne, mentions that the EF-111A crew,
Denton and Brandon, were with the 390th ECS/366th TFW, on pg 51.
13. Capt Denton an Capt Brandon (EF-11A) were assigned to the 390th ECS of the 48th TFW,
but were flying a 42nd ECS aircraft from the 66th ECW.
14. Journal of Military Aviation (Jan/Feb 92) article by Bill Strandberg, pg 26, says that Capt
Rhory R. "Hoser" Draeger's F-15C had the bureau number of 85-0108, not 85-0119.
15. John Deur reports that the USAF now feels that the F-1 Mirage that crashed chasing down
the EF-111A flown by Denton and Bandini was the same one credited to Graeter as a second
Kill due to maneuvering suicide, even though it apparently was chasing the EF-111 and had
fired a missile at it. Deur also credits the EF-111 crew as being from the 390th ECS, 48th
TFW out of RAF Lakenheath deployed to Taif.
16. The 58th TFS F-15's from the 33rd TFW deployed from Eglin AFB, Florida operated as their
own Provisional Wing at Tabuk AB, Saudi Arabia (King Faisal Air Base) also shared with
British Tornados. Likewise, the 1st TFW out of Langley AFB, Virginia, operated as its own
Provisional Wing at Dhahran AB.
17. Pentagon Report (page 160) lists both of Graeter's Kills as being from AIM-7's

Notes for Day 2:
1. McPeak's Briefing cites 2 Kills. After analysis for several months
there seems to be no explanation of these claims for the McPeak Brief
charts. EF-111 "MS" and GR-1 "Bomb Kill" were in no way firm then.
2. Pentagon Release cites no missile expenditures
3. McAir F-15 Briefing cites no Kills
4. Raytheon Briefing cites no Sparrow expenditures
5. Maj Bill Strandberg's assessment shows no credited F-15 kills
6. CENTCOM Message 30May91 still makes no references of Kill credits
7. Bill Strandberg makes no note of the GR.1 Bomb Kill
8. No confirmation from RAF sources to date
9. No mention of this event in any USAF documentation to date

4. Raytheon Briefing cites 4 Sparrow Kills, (1)F-1 + (1)MiG-29 + (2)MiG-25
5. There is a possibility that (1)AIM-7 might have caused the 2nd F-1 to crash
6. Maj Bill Strandberg Jr's assessment shows (5) AIM-7 Kills + (1) MS
7. CENTCOM Message confirms the claims made during this day
8. "Inside the Air Force" states that the MiG-25's were in a visual engagement
9. Friedman's Book, Desert Victory, credits only (5) Kills, lacking (1) MiG-25
10. Bill Strandberg determined that Sveden was attached to the 32nd TFS,
32nd TFG at Schoesterberg
11. The F-15's from the 525th TFS deployed to the 7440th Composite Wing (Provisional) at Incirlik AB, Turkey, came from the 36th TFW stationed at Bitburg AB, Germany. The 58th TFS F-15's from the 33rd TFW deployed from Eglin AFB, Florida operated as their own Provisional Wing at Tabuk AB, Saudi Arabia (King Faisal Air Base) also shared with British Tornados.

2. Pentagon Release makes no mention of any missile expenditures
3. McAir F-15 Briefing makes no mention of any Kills
4. Raytheon Briefing cites 3 Sparrow Kills, (2)F-1 + (1)MiG-29
5. The next Kill-Day is Day 8, it must be that these Kills missed McPeak's
Brief, the Pentagon Release, and McAir's Paris Air Show Pitch. Only Raytheon has the Kill's recorded.
6. Maj Bill Stranberg Jr's assessment shows no kills this date
7. The CENTCOM Message also makes no mention of kills on this date. The
Raytheon expenditures claim is in suspect, although as of 15Nov91,
Raytheon said that they were sticking by their assessment.

44 Total Kills Reasonably Verified
Aerospace Daily 12April91: 552nd AWCW from Tinker AFB in Air Force Times (15Apr91, pg11) said that their were a total of 42 engagements during the war that were initiated by the AWACS. AWACS crews say that all USAF engagements had their support. They also say that everything that moved in Iraq was seen by them which I dispute. Russian documents give the Iraqi AF many more sorties than claimed by the USAF, several Kills started with "pop-up" targets (even from H2 area), and despite forward location, AWACS 200-300 low altitude "look" would still leave a lot of ground uncovered.
POST GULF WAR CONFONTATION PERIOD:
Date Day Kills Unit Aircraft AIM-7 AIM-9 AMRAAM TGT Aircraft
27Dec92 1
363rd FW F-16D Blk42 (BEAM)D MiG-25
33rd FS WVR North
-----------------------------------------------------------
Notes:
1. Encounter occurred in the imposed "NO-FLY ZONE" below the 32nd Parallel
north of the Saudi border. 2 x MiG-25's departed Al Kut Air Base and ventured under control into the "Zone". 2 x CAP F-15C's vectored on them,
the MiG-25's turned back. The F-15's pursued but "Bingoed" for fuel. As they turned back south, so did the Foxbats. F-16's were covering the F-15
egress and engaged the MiG-25's. 1 x AMRAAM was fired active at about
3 nm and it killed one of the Foxbats. The second aircraft fled to Iran.
2. Silent pride for the F-16 Fighting Falcon that has always had to play second fiddle to the F-15 Eagle in the USAF. Armed with "slammers" the "Viper" moves into the front lines with great pride and ability to be small, look far, and shoot fast. The Eagles continue over Iraq with caution while the Falcons seek to destroy.

Notes:
1. It was reported that 2 x AMRAAM's were fired, no details yet
2. At first the Target was considered to be a MiG-23, then changed
to a MiG-29, this debate continues years latere because there are no lower class confirming sources oither than pilot rumprs and the fact that the squadron painted the MiG-29 on the aircraft as a Kill, not a MiG-23.

Notes:
1. The F-15 fired 1 x AMRAAM and 1 x AIM-7
2. Hughes Memo states that it was a MiG-25 fired on with an AMRAAM launch
at a range of 27 nm with the shooter at 35K. At 17 nm a AIM-7 was fired at
the same target to increase Pk.
3. Kill NOT CONFIRMED by the USAF and in fact considered a MISS
USAF F-15C's scored 34 of the 38 total USAF Kills and 44 total Coalition Kills. There were 41 Total
US Air-to-Air Victories (FW & Helo) of the 44 Total Coalition Kills:
24 with AIM-7 (note IL-76 Kill was decided to be an AIM-7 Kill, 1 x USN F-18 Kill of a MiG-21)
12 with AIM-9 (8 x USAF F-15C, 1 x F-18, 2 x RSAF F-15C, and 1 x F-14)

----
46 Total Confirmed Kills (one active debate and two additional discussions)
Note 1: Air Force Magazine (March 1991, page 24) reported that:
"At the end of the first week, coalition pilots had shot down: (8) MiG-29, (2) MiG-25, (1) MiG-23, and (6) F-1 Mirages." and the (8) MiG-29's is repeated in other sources.
Note 2: FYEO, Volume 0158, Issue 0010, 04/12/9:
Of the 39 Kills, 36 were with missiles and 2 with guns and 1 maneuvering suicide.
Gives the following totals: F-15C's scored 34 of the 39 US air-to-air victories.
25 were from AIM-7's and 8 from AIM-9's with 1 Maneuvering Suicide. 4 F-15 pilots
achiebed two kills on the same mission, but no Aces. 33rd TFW with 17, the 36th 15.
When you add the Navy F-18 AIM-7 Kill on a MiG-21 you get 26 AIM-7 Kills. Then
add the 2 Saudi F-15 AIM-9 Kills and the F-14 AIM-9 Kill on a Helo and you get 11 and
then there are 7 more USAF unverified Kills that were unaccounted for.
Note 3: McAir has marketed the fact that its products killed 39 out of the 44 kills (89%)
Note 4: CENTCOM Awards Message did not confirm Capt Danney's 2nd MiG-23 Kill (27Jan)
but it was confirmed on Maj Bill Strandberg's assessment, therefore for this work
it is a Kill. Likewise Col Parson's 2nd Su-7/17 Kill is also not confirmed and also
mentioned as a Kill with Maj Strandberg, but the Col's F-15 arrived at Eglin with only
one Kill credited to him and the "2" was scratched out on the CENTCOM Message. For
now it will not be counted, which keeps the total at 44.
Note 5: Pentagon July 1991 Report states that Sparrow achieved 25 Kills and the Sidewinder 8 for a total of 33 with one maneuvering suicide for 34 for USAF F-15C's.
Note 6: The Pentagon Report stated that under 20 x Sidewinders were expended. We have seen 12 x Kills, but there appears to have been many more missiles expended and lost during the air campaign. The number of total expenditures should be around 76, particularily when considering the 20-30 that were inadvertently expended by F-16's due to swich problems.
Note 7: The Pentagon Report also states that there were 71 x Sparrow firing attempts, 67 of which were USAF and 4 for the USN. "USAF hit rate was nearly triple the success rate in Southeast Asia"...."The success rate of Sparrows launched within the missile's envelope was double the success rate in SEA. A larger percentage of the launch attempts were in the envelope and a much greater persentage were successful against targets at low altitude." The 4 x USN Sparrow allocations appears to not be considering the 3-5 inadvertently expended by F-18 due to switch problems.
Note 8. Last three kills are being assessed. All are considered to be AMRAAM kills, but todate the results of the F-15 engagement has been a mystery. News Services say that the Foxbat landed and was not downed, aircrews say that the F-15 was credited with a Kill.
