3.9. ANTI-AIRCRAFT WEAPON SYSTEMS (153)

The control system Universal-1E is an air defense system for both fighters and anti-aircraft units. The A-50 Shmel “Mainstay” AWACS plane works as a part of the Universal-1E system.

TOR, TOR-M1, SA-15 “Gauntlet” is designed by ANTEY concern. It has the 3D-pulse-doppler target designator radar on C-band with a range of 25 km. The fire control radar applies pulse compression and FTT on K-band with range less than 25 km. TV-system can be used as a secondary method. Eight vertically launched 9M330 and 9M331 missiles per launcher are designed by Fakel. The system can track 48 targets automatically. The number of TOR units was over 200 in 1993.

BUK, BUK M1 9K37M1, SA-11 “Gadfly” is designed by ALTIR NPO and manufactured by Ulyanovsk. The system contains a 9S470M1 command vechicle, and 9S18M1 “Snow Drift” 3D-target designator radar with a range less than 100 km. It can handle simultaneuosly 75 targets and track automatically 15 targets. The missile is 9M38/38M1 semi-active monopulse missile with a range of 3 - 32 km.

S-300P/PM/PS/PMU/PMU-1/PMU-2, SA-10a/b “Grumble” is designed by Almaz and Fakel. The 36D6 (Tin Shield) 3D-surveillance radar works on S-band. The 76N6 (Clam Shell) surveillance radar has been added to the system to improve the low level interception capability; it`s range is 90 km. The missiles are the 5V55 with range of 3 - 75 km, the 48N6 with range 3 - 150 km, the 48N6E2 with range of 3 - 200 km, the 9M96E with range of 1 - 40 km and 9M96E2 with range of 1 - 120 km. In 1998 there were 150 S-300P and PM units.

The S-400 Triumph system was tested on 12th February in the Kapustin Yar area. The designed range is 400 km. The 9M96E missile is launched vertically. For longer ranges some test missiles has been assembled.

S-300V, SA-12 a/b, “Gladiator/”Giant” is a multipurpose system with “Bill Board” and “High Screen” surveillance radars and “Grill Pan” fire control radars. The control center can display 200 targets from which 70 can be tracked and 24 designate to the fire control radars. The 9M83 “Gladiator” missile has range of 6 - 40 km, the 9M82 “Giant” has range of 1 - 30 km. There were about 100 launchers in 1991 making about four brigades. The modernized version of S-300V/V1 is called Antey-2500 which was displayed in the Eurosatory 98.
