The Finnish Air Force
FAF, A HISTORICAL REVIEW
By Lt Gen Heikki Nikunen
The Finnish Air Force was founded on 6th March 1918. There was one exceptional feature in the founding of the FAF, that it was organized right from the start as an independent branch of the armed forces. This foresight created a good basis for its development and made it one of the oldest air forces in the world.
Lt Nils Kindberg in the cockpit of the first Finnish Air Force aircraft - a Morane Thulin Parasol, at Umeå in Sweden in the morning of the 6th of March 1918. The aircraft was donated by the Swedish count Eric von Rosen and the date of the flight is still recongnised as the Finnish Air Force anniversary day.
