25 January 1991 (Friday): DAY 9

GENERAL

v UN rejects Soviet Cease Fire bid

v Soviet sources say that Iraqi Air Force & Air Defense Commanders were

executed by Saddam

v Iraq dumps over 12 million barrels of oil into the Gulf

v "Saddam Hussein continues to amaze the world" with actions that make no

military sense, Bush said, calling the oil dumping "sick." Bush said meetings

have been held to discuss ways of stopping the oil spills and an agreement is near.

He would not elaborate. Asked whether he would make his State of the Union address

from somewhere other than the Capitol next week, to avoid possible terrorism, Bush

said "life goes on...We are not going to be held captive." Bush also said he is

disappointed with the Soviet Union's use of force in the Baltics. Slick estimated at

12 million barrels.

v Iraqi minelayer damaged by surface ships

AIR WAR:

v Iraqi Air Force Commander and Air Defense Commander are reported executed

v over 18,000 sorties flown; 11,000 combat missions, 2700 today

v RAF officially suspends low level flying and passes 650 sorties

v UK Commander Sir Peter de la Billiere announces that the RAF will send Buccaneer's

v Iraqi AF losses listed as 19 in air-to-air combat and 24 on the ground (43 total)

v Coalition losses listed as 17 which is 2/10's of 1% of all missions flown.

v 6 x F-117's depart Langley AFB for the Gulf for the 416th TFS at Khamis Mushait

 

F-117 HIGHLIGHTS (25Jan/Day 9):

v Day 9/Wave Three: 7 x F-117's from 415th TFS

3 x F-117's from 416th TFS

- 10 a/c t/o during the evening of Day 9/25th to hit targets on Day 10/25th

- Scored 0 hits with 1 PGM attempts (0%), 19 x no-drops

- targets were enemy airfields but bad weather obscured all targets

v Day 10/Wave One: 3 x F-117's from 415th TFS

3 x F-117's from 416th TFS

- 6 a/c t/o during the evening of Day 9/25th to hit targets on Day 10/26th

- Scored 5 hits with 8 PGM attempts (0%), 5 x no-drops

- targets were bridges at Al Madinah, Ar Rumaylah, Al Qurnah, Myftul,

Al Fifl, Al Basrah, An Nasiriyah, and As Samarah

- Tallil Airfield

v Day 10/Wave Two: 4 x F-117's from the 415th with takeoff at 22:00

4 x F-117's from the 415th with takeoff at 23:00

- takeoff during the evening of Day 9/25th to hit targets on Day 10/26th

- sequential attack on H-2 and H-3 Airfields

- Scored 8 hits with 12 PGM attempts (80%), 3 x no-drops

SCUDS:

v 7 x SCUD's fired at Israel, 60 casualties (1 dead), Patriot missed all but 2

This was considered by Israel as a barrage and all Patriot batteries were shifted to

manual tracking to sort out the warheads from the debris of SCUD breakup

v 3 x SCUD's fired at Saudi Arabia
