Day 16: 1 Feb 1991

 

01 February 1991 (Friday): DAY 16

GENERAL:

v France gave permission for B-52's to cross through French airspace and for

tankers to be staged at French Bases

v Cluster Bombs were dropped near 2nd MARDIV troops, no casualties

v Iraqi Vice President Ibrahim said that Kurds who support the coalition will be

attacked with chemical weapons

v there were 73 terrorists attacks world wide since 16 Jan, 34 against US

interests

v renewed fighting around Khafji and probe at Umm Hujul

AIR WAR:

v 2500 x Sorties this date, over 34,000 flown

- 600 x against the Republican Guards

- 19 x Packages

- 5 x B-52 Cells

v B-52's attack 1000 x vehicle convoy, at least 100 x destroyed

v 80% of Wild Weasel Sorties noted no radar activity

v a large column of Iraqi armour heading south was destroyed, USAF said that this

was the first time in history that air power alone stopped a ground attack, but

the Army said it was merely a resupply effort and redployment of reserves

v Combat debut of the Buccaneer S2B using the Westinghouse AN/AVQ-23E Pave Spike

laser designator pod in attacking a bridge over the Euphrates River with six Paveway

bombs dropped by 2 x GR-1 Tornado's

v USN A-6's attack Uum Qasr Naval Base, 1 x PB sunk at Min-al-Bakr Terminal

 

F-117 HIGHLIGHTS (01Feb/Day 16):

v Day 16/Wave Two: 6 x F-117's from the 416th TFS

6 x F-117's from the 415th TFS

- takeoff during the a.m. of Day 15/31st to hit targets on Day 15/31st

- the 415th lost 1 x ground abort and the 416th lost 2 x non-availability

of aircraft leaving 7 x F-117's to press the attack

- Scored 13 hits with 23 PGM attempts (57%)

- Bridges at Al Basrah, Al Qurnah, Ar Rumaylah, and Al Fifl

- Communications Facilities at Al Kut, Al Amarah, and An Nasiriyah

- Chemical Warfare Bunkers at Tallil

- Ammunition Storage Sites at Ash Shuybah, An Nasiriya, and Ubaydah Bin Al Jarrah Airfield

v Day 17/Wave One: 4 x F-117's from the 416th TFS

6 x F-117's from the 415th TFS

- takeoff during the p.m. of Day 16/01st to hit targets on Day 17/02nd

- 2.5 hours into the mission brought the F-117's to the target area

- Scored 18 hits with 19 PGM attempts (95%)

- Bridges at Al Basrah, Tannunah, Al Madina, Ar Rumaylah, and An Nasiriyah

- Communications Systems Sites at Jalibah, and Tall Af Lahm

- Ammunition Storage Sites at Ash Shuybah, and An Nasiriyah

- Ubaydah Bin Al Jarrah Airfield

v Day 17/Wave Two: 7 x F-117's from the 416th TFS

6 x F-117's from the 415th TFS

- takeoff during the p.m. of Day 15/31st to hit targets on Day 16/01st

- the 415th lost 1 x air aborted, leaving 15 x F-117's to press the attack

- Scored 20 hits with 21 PGM attempts (95%)

- Bridges at Al Basrah, Tannunah, Al Madina, and Saqash

- Communications Facilities at Al Amarah Samawah, Tallil, Ad Diwaniyah,

and Al Kuwayt

- Military Headquarters Buildings at Az Zubayr

- Airfields at Ahmed Al jaber and Tallil

KILLS: None Recorded

LOSSES

v Iraq claimed three aircraft downed
