27 January 1991 (Sunday): DAY 11

GENERAL

v Giants beat the Bills, 20 to 19, in Superbowl XXV

v 110 Iraqi EPW's

v Schwarzkopf says: "If they won't fly up to meet us, we will fly down and destroy

their hardened shelters, one by one."

AIR WAR:

v 4 x Kills recorded by the McPeak Briefing

- 2 x F-15's engaged and killed (4) Mig-23's SE of Bagdad at 11:20 AM

v Sortie total now over 18,500 with 23 planes lost, 17 to combat

v 45 x Iraqi aircraft are considered destroyed by Press reports, (26) in air combat

v 39 x are estimated as being in Turkey

v F-111F's utilize GBU-15(v)-2/B LGB's to destroy two oil pipeline feeding

manifolds at the Al Almadi pumping station which were set by the Iraqi's to dump

crude oil into the Gulf waters.

- 4 x F-111F's from the 493rd TFS were launched

- aircraft had 2 x GBU-15, 1 x Data Link Pod, and ECM Pods

- one aircraft turned back in an airborne maintenance abort

- Capt Rick Walker / Capt Ken Theurer in A/C #1

- Maj Sammy Samson / Capt Steve Williams in A/C #2

- Capt Mike Russell / Capt Brad Seipel A/C #3

- A/C #1 & 2 each dropped one weapon at supersonic speed

- A/C #3 orbit at 50 nm and guided the weapons into the manifolds

v From 7PM Sat to 7PM Sun, 23 more aircraft fleed into Iran. New Total = 39

v USN A-6's attack and kill an Iraqi ship. Score to date:

... 8 vessels presumed destroyed

- one oil platform service ship

- 2 patrol boats, 1 tanker, and 4 unknowns

... 10 confirmed sinkings

- 4 mining vessels, 1 hovercraft, 3 patrol boats, and 2 unknowns

 

F-117 HIGHLIGHTS (27Jan/Day 11):

v Day 11/Wave Three: 6 x F-117's from the 416th TFS

4 x F-117's from the 415th TFS

- scheduled against two target complexes

- took off on Day 11/27th and hit targets on Day 11 with 1 x air abort

- Scored 9 hits with 18 PGM attempts (50%)

- targets were H-2 airfield and various SCUD Missile Sites

v Day 12/Wave One: 6 x F-117's from the 415th TFS

4 x F-117's from the 416th TFS

- takeoff during the evening of Day 11/27th to hit targets on Day 12/28th

- Scored 13 hits with 18 PGM attempts (72%)

- targets were airfields at: Balad and Rasheed

- Communications Facilities at Bagdad and Ad Dujayl

- the Salmon Pak Troposcatter Station

- the Iraqi Intelligence Service Headquarters in Bagdad

- a Biological Warfare Facility at Abu Ghurayb

v Day 12/Wave Two: 6 x F-117's from the 415th TFS

8 x F-117's from the 416th TFS

- takeoff during the evening of Day 11/27th to hit targets on Day 12/28th

- Scored 24 hits out of 26 PGM attempts (92%)

- Attack Iraqi Airfields at: Bagdad and Rasheed

- a Chemical/Biological Warfare Research, Production, & Storage

facility at Salmon Pak

- Highway Bridges at An Nasiriyah and Al Madinah

- the Bagdad Nuclear Research Center

KILLS:

v 4 x Kills on MiG-23's by 4 x F-15C's at 11:20 local, around 60 miles

south of Bagdad on a Fighter Sweep (it was Super Bowl Sunday). This encounter

lasted 8 - 10 minutes due to the time to intercept. Denny & Powell.

- 1 x MiG-23BN Flogger H by an F-15C, 36th TFW (Bitburg)

... 53rd TFS, flying out of Tabuk

... vectored towards targets, radar contact at 80 nautical miles

... at 40 miles the targets turned around unaware of the F-15's

... from 27,000 ft the F-15's dived on the descending MiG-23's

... targets were at 5,000 ft., 1st section in trail, and the 2nd

section (MiG-23/F-1) were "welded wing"

... the F-15's descended below the altitude of the targets

... (1) AIM-7 guide, exploded, but no Kill

... 1 x AIM-9 Hit and KILL

... Tail-On Day Shot

... call was made to not jettison tanks because the Iraqi formation

appeared to be non-reactive and poor tactically

... MiG-23's were noted to turn away after each lock-up

... Kill verified by CENTCOM and Officially awarded by TAC

- 1 x MiG-23BN Flogger H by an F-15C, 36th TFW

... 53rd TFS

... second Kill on this sortie, but after Powell got the two in formation
