Heat Number Two

Next up were Mimosa (blue) and Peppi (red). They too accelerated uphill with tremendous energy...

In the second corner, Peppi was leading by a hound's length and the dogs dashed past us like two grey-coated lightnings... The structure in the background is a ski lift.

But then it happened again ! After the second corner the dogs no longer had any idea where the lure had gone !

Despite this setback, Mimosa had a great time bouncing up and down on the hillside like the tiger in Winnie the Pooh.

Peppi was somewhat more restrained but nevertheless her race was over too.

The judges gathered to discuss the situation. For some reason all four Deerhounds had lost the lure in the same corner. Was something wrong here ? Well, we can't very well go and paint the lure orange just so that the Deerhounds will see it, can we ? one judge declared. The others concurred. Our race was over, we got lousy points and no Deerhounds made it to the finals !

The bunnies had outwitted us ! They had us beat but this only served to further our determination to get them ! By the end of the season those same bunnies would be applying for work permits in other countries... our Deerhounds would return faster, scarier and more attentive in September !
