The austenitic stainless steels are characterized by a unique combination of material properties. The austenitic stainless steels have found a wide application field because of the superior properties and many new applications are expected to arise in future.
These are the most important characteristics: high corrosion resistance, high ductility and impact resistance even at the lowest temperatures, good formability, high strength at elevated temperatures, good weldability and ease of cleaning. Some applications find use of the non-magnetic character or of the high strength achieved through coldworking due to a high strain hardening capability too.
